Failure and damage investigation of plastics

A project financed by the Region of Southern Denmark and the Danish Agency for Science and Innovation.

A failure in a plastics product, e.g. in connection with drainage of large volumes of water, in supporting structures or in a medical device for drug delivery, can often have disastrous consequences. Once the damage has been done, there is often a need for quick clarification of the cause of the incident to prevent future accidents.

The goal of the project is therefore to develop skills to find the cause of a failure in a plastics product in a fast and systematic fashion. A further goal is to build up expertise about failure mechanisms and failure patterns in plastics based on experience with the use of light microscopy and especially electron microscopy (SEM), which is widely used in accident investigations on metals.

A report describing the project has been prepared.
