Degradation of plastics
A project financed by the Danish Agency for Science and Innovation.
All materials are subject to degradation over time, but there are particular problems with plastics, as they degrade faster than other materials.
The degradation depends on the type of plastic involved and on the conditions that the material is exposed to during production (heat, sterilization, etc.) and during usage (UV-light, weather conditions, chemicals and heat).
The project goal was to obtain more information about how plastic degrades and which factors influence the degradation of a particular type of plastic. On the basis of these data, the goal was to set guidelines for increasing the life-time of plastics and preventing untimely degradation.
A report describing the project has been prepared.
